La Carioca’s mission is to combine eco-friendly slow fashion principles, fair trade business practices, and clean production with excellent quality and eye-catching design. La Carioca’s range of Brazilian Beachwear & Activewear allows you to purchase ethically whilst shopping with style.
Slow Fashion Movement
A Sustainable Closet That Never Goes Out of Style. In essence, slow fashion is the opposite of consumerism-driven disposable fast fashion. La Carioca’s commitment is to create timeless designs from carefully selected materials that lengthen the life of the garment. La Carioca’s clothes are made to last and they never go out of fashion.
Respect for the Environment
By providing excellent quality, handmade, ethically sourced products such as our biodegradable & eco-friendly ranges, our commitment is to offer our clients a path to Save our Planet through sustainable shopping.
La Carioca makes conscious decisions when it comes to our supply chain. From textiles to manufacturing, business cards to tags and packaging, we use materials with sustainability in mind from responsibly sourced fa brics and factories while developing relationships with people we believe in.
Our textile suppliers include Rosset & Santaconstancia. Rosset is the largest textile company in Latin America and is a well known textile group that uses a manufacturing technique that preserves water resources and limits gas emissions into the atmosphere. Santaconstancia, an award winning textile company using advanced technology to create textiles that minimise the impact on the environment.
Santaconstancia production processes involve the use of recycled water, digital printing and CO2 Control emissions. One such development is the Amni Soul Eco® textile. This is the first 6.6 biodegradable nylon in the world. The result of a partnership between Santaconstancia and Rhodia. This sustainable textile was developed to decompose within less than 5 years when placed at an anaerobic landfill. Both brands have received the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certification, an authentication that the company complies with criteria in choosing chemical inputs, certifying the material has been tested for harmful substances and is harmless to human health.
We believe every small step can make a difference. For this reason, our commitment goes beyond our beach and activewear designs. Our business cards are made from recycled paper, printed using plant-based ink and produced utilising green energy. They are recyclable, compostable and made locally in Ireland.
Our tags from Papel Semente are made using recycled paper collected by workers in Brazil who are living in vulnerable conditions. The tags contain seeds that can be planted in the earth to grow into a beautiful plant.
Our postal boxes are kraft and produced with use of green energy, also sourced locally in Ireland.
Fair Trade principles are fundamental to our business model. La Carioca works with small micro manufacturers and independent artisans from Brazil. We support local businesses by paying fair prices and through creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers.
Transparency and Accountability
Our goal is to provide full transparency about our supply chain. To support the movement, “Who made my Clothes” La Carioca is featuring 3 of the small producers who helped to create the 2021 Collection. Edna, an independent tailor from Rio. Neia, a tailor and owner of a small manufacturing factory. Nina, the mother of La Carioca founder Vanessa Frota, one the artisans producing the handmade crochet designs.
Our future goals include making our entire range 100% sustainable and eco-friendly. We aim to be 100% transparent, working with cooperatives supporting women in Brazil. We will evolve, finding new creative solutions for waste materials through upcycling.
We believe Fashion shouldn't cost us the earth. We must all do our part to build a better, greener world.
